The first of many foods with mulberries

Mulberries picked 6/19/11

There is a mulberry tree whose branches hang over where I park my car in the alley. Last summer, my car was purple from all of the fruit falling onto my car. This year I figured I would pick and use the mulberries. My car won’t turn purple and I get free food. Win-win!!

I picked the mulberries above on Saturday with no plans for them in mind. So I did a Google search and found this recipe.

Mulberry muffins

This is a great recipe. The corn meal, cinnamon, and lemon zest really make the muffins, and I’m considering adapting the cake part of the recipe to other flavors.

The problem is the mulberries. They just weren’t very flavorful, certainly not as flavorful as the mulberries I remember eating as a kid. There’s no, I don’t know, pop when you bite into the muffin and get part of a mulberry.

I put the remaining mulberries in the refrigerator and now they taste a bit sweeter. I don’t know if it’s because they’re now a day older or what, but the ones in the muffin aren’t any sweeter. Oh well.

I’m going to be out of town for a couple of days, so Tim is going to freeze the remaining mulberries and I will use them for smoothies.

There are enough unripe mulberries on the tree that I’m going to be drowning in mulberries all summer.
